The A-level German course is designed for native-speakers of German. It prepares students for the different parts of the examination and includes analysis of the set texts. Teenage students receive further training in academic writing and German Literature while adult students following the part-time programme attend a short course of six sessions of 120 minutes, provided that they are at the level of educated native speakers in German. Students who are not of German mother tongue receive additional tuition.
The A-level French course is a programme at advanced level (level 5 or C1) and develops all the requisite skills (writing, reading, listening comprehension and speaking), while expanding vocabulary and studying the finer points of grammar. A number of literary works are covered and there is some practice in creative writing.
A-level English Literature
The literary part of the course covers six works from at least two historical periods. Participants study different aspects of these texts and write essays on their content and form.
The main focus of this course at advanced level is on the history of the 20th century, including the USSR, the Weimar Republic, the 3rd Reich and World War II, as well as a number of other topics.
This course builds on the material of the IGCSE Mathematics course and teaches mathematics to advanced level. The main topics include advanced algebra, coordinate geometry, the differential and integral calculus, sequences and series, trigonometry, logarithms, numerical methods, vectors, the theory of probability, correlation and regression, discrete random variables, normal distribution and certain areas of mechanics (kinematics, dynamics, statics, revolution moment). Students need to have attained a grade A or B in IGCSE Mathematics or give evidence of the corresponding level in order to be admitted on this course.
This course focuses on the principal areas of general biology, including molecules and cells, metabolism and reproduction, energy and the environment, respiration and coordination. Students need to have attained a grade A or B in IGCSE Biology or give evidence of the corresponding level in order to be admitted on this course.
Physics at AS level is more conceptually and mathematically demanding than GCSE and students are advised to do A-level Mathematics alongside Physics. The AS programme covers particles, quantum phenomena and electricity, mechanics, materials and waves.
