19 August 2020.

Dear Parents and students,

On 17th August, Ofqual (The Office of Qualifications and Examinations Regulation, which regulates qualifications, examinations and assessments in England), Edexcel and the British government announced that all IGCSE, AS and A Level grades awarded to students for the June 2020 examinations based on their calculated final grades for students would be reversed.

These calculated final grades from Ofqual and Edexcel were based on the submitted Centre Assessment Grades and rank orders, previous results in each subject, prior attainment of students from this year compared to previous years and results from our school in recent years and were developed using a statistical model to standardise grades across centres in each subject. This statistical model combined a range of evidence including expected grade distributions at national and international level, results in previous years at individual centre level and the prior attainment profile of students at centre level.

Now Ofqual have decided that only Centre Assessment Grades will determine students' June 2020 examination grades. However, if students were awarded a higher grade in the moderation process these grades will remain.

A Centre Assessment Grade is a professional judgement of what students would have most likely achieved if they had sat the June 2020 examinations and is based on a professional understanding of the students' abilities.

Evidence for the Centre Assessment Grades was based on the students' performance over the course of the 2019-20 academic year and drew on existing records and available evidence which included classwork, bookwork, homework, class tests, progress tests and mock exams.

A holistic approach was taken across the whole qualification rather than awarding a grade for each paper and/or each piece of evidence to ensure internal standardisation if there were several classes for each subject.

Once this was accomplished, students were ranked within each grade and each individual subject in order of performance within the grade the students were assigned and within the context of the school's previous results in each subject.

Schools were told to keep the grades and rank orderings as confidential and that they should under no circumstances be given to parents or students.

All grades and rank orders had to be signed off by two subject teachers and the Head of the Centre before submission to Edexcel. Once the data had been completed and a Head of Centre declaration submitted, no further amendments were allowed to be made. All grades and ranks were submitted by 12th June.

Ofqual and Edexcel are working round the clock to adjust the grades awarded so students will receive the Centre Assessment Grades. They anticipate these IAL grades will be available to students and on ResultsPlusDirect by Friday 21st August.

Hull’s School has decided to offer free resits to our students of IGCSE and IAL examinations during the October 2020 series.

If a particular resit examination is not available in October 2020 then students may take their free resits in January 2021.

Please note that, although the registration for the October exams is free, you will still be charged a late entry fee or CHF 100.- per Unit/Paper for handing in your registration form after the deadline of 24 August 2020.

Hull’s School would like to apologise for any inconvenience, uncertainty or stress the June 2020 grading process has caused our students.

We have at every stage of the moderation process only followed the guidelines issued by Ofqual and Edexcel.

Kind regards,

Hull's School.

htts://www.gov.uk/government/news/statement-from-roger-taylor-chair-ofqual
